When you need a FIRA

  • eBRC filing on DGFT. FIRA is the foundational document for generating eBRC. Without it, no eBRC = no RoDTEP, no drawback claims.
  • GST refund claims. Rule 89(2) of CGST Rules requires Bank Realisation Certificate or FIRC for zero-rated export refund claims.
  • EDPMS closure. Your bank uses the FIRA to close the open EDPMS entry against your shipping bill. Unclosed entries risk caution listing.
  • FEMA compliance. FIRA serves as proof that export proceeds were realised within the 9-month repatriation window under FEMA.
  • Income tax (SEZ/STPI). Tax officers request eBRC (which needs FIRA) to verify export income for Section 10AA exemptions.
  • Audit documentation. Keep FIRAs for at least 7 years. Missing FIRA during audit leads to penalties and compliance queries.

Common issues and fixes

  • Wrong purpose code on FIRA. Cannot be fixed on the FIRA itself. Must contact the AD bank for a correction request. See our purpose code change guide.
  • FIRA shows platform name, not buyer. Common with Payoneer, PayPal, Wise. The AD bank maps the intermediary as remitter. Provide your invoices and export documentation to the bank for reconciliation.
  • FIRA not generated. Check if your bank/platform has auto-generation. If not, request explicitly. For SBI, branch visit may be necessary.
  • Bank rejects platform FIRA. Some AD banks don't accept Payoneer/Wise digital FIRAs as sufficient for EDPMS closure. You may need the bank's own e-FIRC in addition to the platform FIRA.
  • Old transaction (>1 year). Higher fees and longer processing at most banks. HDFC charges Rs 590 instead of Rs 236. Start the request as early as possible.
  • FIRA vs e-FIRC for GST. Rule 89(2) requires BRC or FIRC. A FIRA may not be accepted by all GST officers. Get the formal e-FIRC from your bank for refund claims.
